Ford and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration have issued a recall notice for the 2007 Ford Five Hundred and the 2007 Mercury Montego. On each of the sedans, a defective fuel tank could potentially leak fuel.

The Problem: Some fuel tanks produced by Visteon may have poorly welded seams between the tank and the fuel-filler neck. Over time, or after a rear-end impact, the seams could crack. This could cause the check-engine light to illuminate, produce a gasoline odor inside the vehicle, or allow fuel to leak from the tank. In the latter case, the leak could trigger a fire. Ford says it has not received any reports of fires resulting from this problem.
The Fix: Ford will examine affected vehicles and replace any tanks with a problem. The recall will begin August 15.
Number of Vehicles Potentially Affected: 2945 2007 Ford Five Hundred and 2007 Mercury Montego sedans.
