This is Buick’s Envision SUV concept, which the firm has unveiled at the Shanghai motor show.
The four-seater concept uses a 2.0-litre petrol engine with two electric motors inside its eight-speed transmission, a similar hybrid system that GM already employs. At low speeds, the SUV runs on battery power alone, with the engine kicking in to recharge the batteries or to boost power.
When driving more quickly, the petrol engine is the SUV’s main power source, aided by the generator for extra grunt.
Features of the Envision concept include scissor doors and a chassis comprised of carbonfibre, magnesium and aluminium to reduce weight. The suspension is set up with a magnetic ride-control system.
